Things to think about as the new school year approaches: Autism
The new school year is going to start very soon. If you have a child with autism, this can be a really stressful time. Certainly, you know the challenges of living with a child who has behavioral difficulties and are concerned about how to make the adjustment to school.
One way is through social stories..this will help prepare your child and YOU for the upcoming event.
Another thing that you can do is, when you pre-register, schedule a time to meet with your child’s teacher or teachers. Explain to them everything you can about the triggers to your child’s behavior issues and give them every viable solution you can think of. If possible, give these to them in writing, along with your contact information and any emergency contact information you may have for other persons who are can appropriately deal with the situations that may arise.
Most importantly, open the line of communication between you and the teacher. Use words like “we” as much as possible to include the teacher in your child’s Individual Education Plan IEP. Let them know that they are part of a team and that their input is valued.
Often times we forget that teachers have to deal with a classroom full of kids and with our or support and contributions, they really have nowhere to turn but to turn a child out when they find themselves fraught with problems with one child. Much of the issues that arise are purely the result of ignorance. I know that it can be a tough job, but educating others about autism, including teachers, is the best way to spread the word.
